Dr. Douglas R. Maxson, DDS
A dentist who has cared for this community for more than 40 years — and who will show you exactly what he sees before he recommends anything.
When you meet Dr. Douglas Maxson, you are not meeting a dentist who is still learning the questions you are about to ask. You are meeting someone who has cared for San Jose Bay Area families for more than 40 years, who still travels to postgraduate courses because he genuinely loves learning, and who will show you exactly what he sees before he recommends anything.
At Calm Dental Care, Dr. Maxson is the owner and the doctor who personally oversees your care. His wife, Amy, works beside him in the office, and many longtime patients will tell you she is one of the reasons they keep coming back.
Dr. Maxson grew up in St. Peter, Minnesota — paying his way through pre-dental studies working at a pharmacy and running a jackhammer in a limestone quarry every summer. He graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where he was named Periodontal Student of the Year.
Service came first: he served two years as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps at Vandenberg Air Force Base, completing residencies in prosthetics and anesthesia. Those two disciplines shaped his entire career — and are a big reason he is so comfortable with complex restorations and with patients who need help staying relaxed. When his service ended, he opened his practice in San Jose. He has been caring for this community ever since.
He never stopped learning. California asks dentists for 50 units of continuing education every two years. Dr. Maxson has completed more than 5,000 hours since 1970 — training in implants, IV sedation (USC and DOCS), full mouth reconstruction (Las Vegas Institute), orthodontics and Invisalign, lasers, and periodontics. Today he teaches other dentists: an instructor at the Caribbean Institute of Oral and Maxillofacial Implantology and Surgery from 2013 to 2017, and founder of the San Jose Implant Continuum, a hands-on program for local dentists.
His advanced training includes:
- Dental implants: a ten-year University of the Pacific Implant Continuum beginning in 1990, American Academy of Implant Dentistry training, and extensive coursework in implant placement, restoration, and bone grafting.
- Sedation dentistry: IV moderate sedation training through the University of Southern California, plus training with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation (a.k.a. DOCS).
- Full mouth reconstruction: a decade of Las Vegas Institute courses in full mouth rehabilitation, occlusion (how your bite fits together), neuromuscular dentistry, and cosmetic composites.
- Orthodontics and TMJ: more than ten years of orthodontic continuum training, graduation from the Clinical Foundation of Orthopedics, Orthodontics, and TMD, and Invisalign training.
- Lasers and gum health: graduate of the Center for Dental Laser Education and a ten-year member of the University of the Pacific Periodontal Study Club.
Why does this breadth matter? Because your mouth works as a system. When the dentist planning your implant also understands your bite, your gums, and your comfort, your treatment is designed to last, not just to fill a gap.
