What happens when you call
Our receptionist answers the phone during office hours, so you are speaking with someone in the office rather than a call center. If we have to call you back, we usually do so within about two hours during the business day, and by the next business day if you reached us after hours. Having your insurance information, the reason for your visit, and the days and times that work best for you ready will make the call quicker — but none of it is required to get started.
Request an Appointment Online
Use the form below to request an appointment or ask a question. Include your name, phone number, and the days and times that usually work for you, and we will get back to you within one business day.
Please keep personal and medical details out of the form. A general website form is not a secure way to send health information, so send only what we need to reach you and we will take the rest over the phone. If your problem is urgent, call (408) 996-0176 instead of using the form. If you are having a life-threatening medical emergency, call 911.
Are You Accepting New Patients?
Yes. Calm Dental Care is accepting new patients, including patients transferring from another dental office. You do not need a referral to schedule. We see patients age 12 and older.
We also welcome second opinions on major treatment. A good share of the people who come to us arrive with a complicated problem — a tooth that keeps giving trouble, a treatment plan they do not fully understand, or a bite that has never felt right — and they want another set of eyes before they commit. Dr. Maxson is glad to look, explain what he sees, and tell you honestly whether he would do anything differently.
How Soon Can I Be Seen?
- Routine new-patient visits: usually within about a week, and sooner when the problem is urgent.
- Toothaches and urgent problems: we do our best to see true emergencies the same day. Call the office rather than using the form.
- Implant, cosmetic and clear aligner consultations: these are scheduled differently depending on the procedure. For implant consultation and some restorative planning, we may recommend a 3D cone beam scan first so we can evaluate the bone and the neighboring teeth before discussing options. Ask about sedation dentistry if you are anxious.
- Complimentary consultations: offered for teeth whitening and cosmetic procedures.
If a comprehensive exam, imaging or consultation carries a fee, our team will tell you what it is before you come in, so there are no surprises at the front desk.
Dental Emergencies
During office hours, call (408) 996-0176. Tell the team what happened and what you are feeling. We keep time available throughout the week for emergency dental care in San Jose, so a same-day appointment is often possible.
After hours, call the same number. For a true emergency, calls are forwarded directly to Dr. Douglas R. Maxson, DDS.
Problems we treat urgently include toothache and pain that keeps you up at night, facial or gum swelling, bleeding that won't stop easily, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling, and injury to the teeth or jaw. If you are having a life-threatening medical emergency — difficulty breathing, swelling that is closing your airway, or a serious injury — call 911 first.

Where We Are — Cross Streets, Landmarks and the Building
The office sits at the corner of De Anza Boulevard and Rainbow Drive, a short distance north of the Highway 85 exit at De Anza Boulevard. It is a stand-alone dental and medical building rather than a suite inside a large complex or shopping center, which makes it easier to spot on your first visit.
- Nearest cross streets: S. De Anza Blvd. and Rainbow Dr.
- Building: stand-alone dental and medical building.
- Floor: first floor — no stairs or elevator to manage.
- Where to turn in: enter from Rainbow Drive into the parking lot behind the building.
Driving Directions
Most patients reach us from Highway 85, exiting at De Anza Boulevard and continuing north a short distance to Rainbow Drive, then turning onto Rainbow Drive and into the lot behind the building.
Patients travel to the office from across the west valley, including Cupertino, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Campbell and Los Gatos.
Get directions: open the map for turn-by-turn directions from wherever you are.
Parking
Parking is free, and we have a private patient lot behind the building, entered from Rainbow Drive. There are no meters, no time limits, and nothing to validate, pay or download. Street parking is also available nearby if the lot is full. Accessible spaces are available in the lot.

Accessibility
- The entrance is wheelchair accessible and the office is on the ground floor.
- Accessible parking spaces are available in our lot.
- Our treatment rooms can accommodate wheelchairs and walkers.
If you have mobility needs and would like someone to meet you at the door or help you in from the lot, please mention it when you schedule and we will be ready for you.
Your First Visit
- Arrive about ten minutes early so you have time to complete your registration information and find the office without rushing.
- Bring a photo ID, and your insurance card if you have dental coverage. Send your recent x-rays ahead if you can. If your previous dentist can forward any recent images to our office, it often saves you time and avoids repeating radiographs.
- You are welcome to bring someone with you — a family member or a person you trust — particularly for a consultation where you will be weighing options.
Insurance and Payment
Coverage questions are easier to answer with your plan in front of us, so the quickest route is to call (408) 996-0176 and let our team check whether we are in network with your plan and what your benefits look like. For an overview of how we handle insurance, estimates and payment, see our Financial Policies page.
